BMW Approval

BMW also imposes specific requirements on engine oil in the form of BMW standards. These standards are based on the vehicle’s production year. For example, BMW Longlife-04 applies to many BMW models produced in 2004 or later.

Approval: BMW Longlife-01
Oils compatible with BMW Longlife-01 approval are fully synthetic engine oils for gasoline and diesel engines, excluding DPF-equipped engines. The “01” also indicates that these oils are suitable for cars manufactured from 2001 onwards.

Approval: BMW Longlife-01 FE
Oils compatible with BMW Longlife-01 FE approval are fully synthetic, long-life oils designed for fuel efficiency. Oils meeting this specification must have a slightly lower HTHS viscosity to optimize fuel consumption. These oils are suitable only for the following engines: N1x, N2x, N54, N55, N63, N74.

Approval: BMW Longlife-04
Oils compatible with BMW Longlife-04 approval are fully synthetic long-life engine oils with viscosities of SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, and 5W-40. They are typically used for BMWs equipped with diesel particle filters.

Approval: BMW Longlife-12 FE
This engine oil is specifically for gasoline engines and for diesel engines Nx7K1, Nx7U1, Nx7O1 from 2013 onwards. It is not suitable for 2- or 3-turbo engines.

Approval: BMW Longlife-14 FE
Oils compatible with BMW Longlife-14 FE approval are designed for gasoline engines N20, Bx8, for models from 2014 onwards. They are not approved for diesel engines.

Approval: BMW Longlife-17 FE (BMW LL-17 FE)
This specification is for low-SAPS oils. Oils meeting this specification are generally recommended for the latest BMW gasoline and diesel models.
